GetBackers

The "other" manga to anime conversion of the new season (also based on a shonen manga, incidentally) - Get Backers has some points up on Naruto - the voice cast is okay, and the art stays true to the manga (down to all those SD scenes, which appear with amazing frequency whenever Ban and Ginji aren't in some fight or the other). It also has some slick graphics, and a really diverse cast helps it along well.

What is GetBackers about? The concept couldn't be simpler. Two guys, Mito Ban and Amano Ginji, work as professional "recovery experts" and use their skills to recover all sorts of missing/stolen items. Of course, what really makes GB tick is the amazing cast of characters, each with their own interesting skills/powers. Everyone has some secrets about their past hidden too in GB, and there is some real character development in the manga. Hopefully this will make it over to the anime. Promisingly, the cast seems to have been retained for the anime.

Get Backers might not be much else than a simple shonen story with lots of people with supernatural powers, but few others pull it off so well and with such interesting characters not just motivated by your usual revenge and pride. Of course, the GB brand of comedy takes some getting used to (Ginji and Ban are absolute deadbeats off the job), as well as the trademark "Evil Eye" scenes which seem to be a staple of every episode (it's an important plot device in GetBackers, never take something happening to be really happening until you can really be sure of it).

Update after seeing episodes 2-4: Ooh, just got to love Dr Jackal... they chose the perfect seiyuu to play him too. If there's any reason to watch GB, it's him, the heartless killer that you can count on but not trust as a partner... and of course, there's always the question, where does he keep all those knives?

Also, I'll be frank about it, although I like the art in Get Backers a lot more than in Naruto, it can be patchy. It's probably due to the over-faithfulness to the manga (like what happened in Saikano), it's much harder to integrate super-deformed scenes into an anime.
