Vagabond

You thought Takehiko
Inoue only did Slam Dunk? Think again - this is his latest work, and it's
dripping with superb (if extremely bloody and violent) swordfighting action,
as well as backgrounds so laden with detail you'll find yourself squinting
at them to tell yourself "I'm not dreaming, he did draw each
and every leaf in that picture...."

Based on the semi-historical semi-(auto)biographical
novel "Musashi" (itself considered a classic), Vagabond presents
the life of Miyamoto Musashi, swordsman extraordinaire. He starts off as
nothing more than a guy with a lot of guts and brute strength, but as he
takes on stronger and stronger opponents he learns his own abilities and
develops them. There's wonderful action, as well as the fact that the showdowns
in Vagabond are mental as well as physical - part of Musashi's fearsome powers
comes from his unbending resolve.
One note though, Vagabond has quite a lot of violence and a smattering
of sex every now and then. Definitely not for the weak of stomach.
