Haibane Renmei - The story so far...

Note: this is a short synopsis of what's happened so far up to episode 9, which is as far as I've watched.
Episodes 1-4 mainly serve as an introduction to the world of Haibane Renmei,
and to the characters. The tone is much more light-hearted than the later
episodes, and you'd be forgiven for doubting this is an Abe work after watching
just these four, as we watch Rakka wander about clumsily discovering her
place in this new world of hers.
But, this is an Abe work after all. In episode 5, Kuu starts acting strangely,
and the episode culminates in her vanishing in the west forest. Rakka takes
Kuu's disappearance very badly and she remains depressed for the next 4 episodes.
From this point on, Haibane Renmei starts delving into the questions silently
posed since the beginning of the anime: What are Haibane? Why do some go
away while others remain and grow up? What does the dream have to do with
it?
Reki really becomes revealed as a fallen angel, a Haibane punished by the
federation with a dark past, tainted wings, and a dream she cannot remember.
However, when Rakka develops black flecks on her wings too, Reki tells her
she was born without sins, unlike Reki herself. What is the meaning of this?
We also learn of a lot more of Reki's past, and a clue to Rakka's dream is revealed... but how will it end?
